Sad to say, Ms. Dunne was wrong about this film. If there was anyone who ever understood the customs and the authentic look of that period, it was James Whale. The acting was magnificent, as magnificent as the singing, and despite some changes, it is far more faithful to the show than MGM's 1951 version (or the 1929 part-talkie, for that matter).Albert Sanchez Morenohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13022999926904521449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1251568927451439906.post-90448475006595171662011-02-20T22:37:48.307-08:002011-02-20T22:37:48.307-08:00Susanne,I have to get personal and reveal somethin...Susanne,I have to get personal and reveal something embarrassing here-I've never seen this version all the way through (not because I didn't want to!)but because I had to go back to work. I have seen the remake from the 50's which-only very intermittently-touched me, but I still couldn't understand what all the fuss was about-why was this such a classic?
And then a group of actors and actresses from the stage version of the play stopped in late one night after a performance, and I really "got it"! Just funny 'show people' having a good time and stuffing their faces after a hard nights work.
It makes me wish that one of Irene's performances could have been filmed while she was onstage, because there's nothing else like it-there's an energy to live performances that just can't be replicated on film. Your review makes me want to sit down and watch Irene's version from beginning to end. As lackluster as Whale's direction might have been (and I have to think this versions "early talkie" status might have had something to with that), at least he captured some of her work for all time--and Helen Morgan's! Along with Ruth Etting, I consider H M to be one of the best popular singers of her time (is there even any singers/actresses of a comparable level to these three --Dunne, Morgan, Etting--working nowdays?)AKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02084216883655540363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1251568927451439906.post-27643588760346452982011-02-09T08:46:44.244-08:002011-02-09T08:46:44.244-08:00If it was Irene’s blue hat or her pure talent whic...If it was Irene’s blue hat or her pure talent which let her win the part as Magnolia in the road company of Show Boat, I’m more than happy she got the opportunity to play the part and wasn’t lost to a life as the little housewife. :) Gosh, what we would have missed without her magnificent performances. Thank you, Irene Dunne.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
