I watched the remake long way before the 1935 version, and agree with you, Rob, that the most sticking thing about it is that creamy, 50s cinematography. I rewatched it recently as a kind of "finish" of this review, but I have to admitt - no offence intended - Jane Wyman just does nothing for me. The most interesting about remakes is how each era puts its mark on the stories and way of filming...and I intend to watch all remakes of Irene´s films, Renata!;) Considering the fact that the original version ended as an extra on the Criterion DVD (thanks for mentioning this,Matheus!), I´m afraid that we´ll wait for a director´s cut in vain! I´d be the first to buy it, though! :)casuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02745343029575366237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1251568927451439906.post-17186127999945490972011-01-06T20:58:03.150-08:002011-01-06T20:58:03.150-08:00What a wonderful, detailed review of this film (an...What a wonderful, detailed review of this film (and Happy Holidays to you)! I've only seen the remake, which was...ok (beautiful color cinematography)but that's about it.And it's a darn shame that the "happy interlude" (God bless Jeanine Basinger!) was shortened--how cool it would be if they could do a directors cut with all the missing footage inserted back into the film!AKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02084216883655540363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1251568927451439906.post-964633709010692112011-01-04T07:55:30.071-08:002011-01-04T07:55:30.071-08:00Perhaps It's worth mentioning that the Region ...Perhaps It's worth mentioning that the Region 1 DVD of Jane Wyman's 1954 remake from Criterion Collection has Irene's original as an extra on the 2nd disc.

And a Happy New Year for all here, too.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1251568927451439906.post-8997022193666937052011-01-04T04:03:10.492-08:002011-01-04T04:03:10.492-08:00Susanne, thanks again for another wonderful review...Susanne, thanks again for another wonderful review and first of all let me wish you a happy new year and all the best for this 2011.

I couldn't agree more with you, Magnificent Obsession is a beautiful movie and it's one of the movies that made me notice what a wonderful actress Irene was. I haven't seen the remake (and I don't really plan to do it) but I was surprised to learn that Jane Wyman's "Helen" wore sunglasses and still the remake is more popular than the original one. Those are the things I just can't understand!

Maybe the only "BUT" I'd give to this movie is that there are some scenes that are way too long and Irene is nowhere to be seen for about 20 minutes, I think it would have been better to see more of the blinded Irene during these precious minutes but that's just my point of view.

The movie itself is beautiful and one of my absolute favorites.Renatahttp://www.facebook.com/renifilinnoreply@blogger.com
